How a wood-burning stove is fitted
We explain the steps involved and which aspects might cost extra
How is a wood-burning stove installed if you have a chimney?
We supply and install the finest quality woodburners. We feel it is important for you to understand the installation process.
Preparatory building work
The first step in the installation of your new woodburner is to “break out” your chimney and take it back to what’s called the “builders opening”, this typically takes a day.
At this point we will remove your current fire surround, hearth and other masonry within the fireplace recess.
A concrete support lintel or reinforced iron lintel is fitted.
The cost of this initial work, including removal of all rubble, costs from £480-£750 including VAT and needs to be added to the price of the stove package you choose.
We will then discuss with you the next steps. You may decide you want to keep the brick interior of your fireplace.
If, however, the interior is not aesthetically pleasing we will arrange for the interior recess of the fireplace to be rendered.
Hearth
At this point, we will measure up for your hearth. In most instances we will supply and fit a made-to-measure one-piece T-shaped hearth. We have learnt from years of experience that slate is by far the best stone for this. It is less prone to scratches and will not crack under the intense heat of the stove.
Our hearths are made from dark grey, described as graphite, Brazilian slate, with a riven finish. The price for these hearths is £480-£600 including VAT, and they typically take 10 days to be manufactured and delivered from our workshop.
Alternatively, for something more rustic we can lay a slabbed stone hearth. The price for this is £300 including VAT.
Slate Hearth
This is our most popular hearth, a one-piece 30mm thick graphite hearth, priced at approximately £480-£600 including VAT fully fitted.
Sandstone Flagstone
Our heritage grey flagstone hearths are a stylish option which cost £300 including VAT, fully fitted.
Mantle
We can supply and fit a solid oak mantle with a choice of 9 different finishes. The profile size is approximately 140mm x 140mm.
Length 1050mm : £210 including VAT.
Length 1200mm : £240 including VAT.
Bespoke sizes are available on request.
Plastering and Rendering
The front face of your chimney breast will require plastering. Furthermore, the vast majority of the time the interior recess will require rendering. It is essential to render the interior as this is far more robust than plaster and will help ensure the walls of your fireplace are not prone to cracking.
The cost for plastering and rendering is £480-£600 including VAT

Flue Liner Fitting
The final step is for us to fit the woodburner rated “316” flue liner and attach it to the stove pipe of your burner using an adapter. A closure plate is then fitted to seal off the chimney opening from the room. A bird guard/cowl is fitted at the top of your chimney.
Testing and Compliance
We then thoroughly test your burner, fit a CO2 detector and issue the required compliance documentation. The price of this is included in the £1680 fitting cost.
